Recommend R Rated movies that are appropriate for kids

For context, I was one of those kids who got taken to an occasional R rated movie by my dad, but he seemed to always be careful about the content. He never chose anything too violent or had a ton of sexual content. He wasn’t too taboo about nudity (in which I don’t think it should be anyway).

I remember him taking me to Forrest Gump and Tombstone and not having any negative impact. Plus I also got an extra history lesson from my dad who would talks about some of the things that happened during that period.

Now that I’m a huge movie buff and a soon to be parent, I’m trying to find some similar movies; R rated movies that are okay for kids as long as I explain the context. I’d prefer some historical movies, but I’m okay with other suggestions

EDIT: Forrest Gump is rated PG-13, though I put it on this list because I was around 5 when my dad took me. Luckily, then only thing I remembered from that screening was Tom Hanks doing his multi-year run around America.
